Elective & Out-of-State Abortion Training

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is committed to educating the next generation of abortion providers. ACGME accredited OBGYN residents with limited or no access to abortion training are invited to apply to a Complex Family Planning elective at OHSU for the 2026-2027 academic year.

The four-week resident rotation in Family Planning is designed to give an overview of the services offered by the Complex Family Planning department. The goal is to provide exposure and experience in:

  • Contraceptive counseling and provision
  • Pre-procedure counseling and procedures for abortion and early pregnancy loss

Visiting residents will work hands-on with faculty and fellows.

Rotations are available between August 2026 and June 2027. Eligible residents will receive funding for travel and housing.

Ob-gyn residency programs in states where abortion is restricted are welcome to apply for help to establish training partnerships with ob-gyn residency programs in states where abortion is not restricted. To receive assistance establishing a partnership we require 50% or more of your residents participate in abortion training out-of-state. If your program meets this parameter please complete the intake form below.

The Ryan Program works directly with ob-gyn residency programs to integrate training in abortion and contraception care (family planning) as a required rotation within their program. All programs establish or expand abortion services in their teaching hospitals and may also create new partnerships with local clinics to train residents. If a program is in a state that restricts abortion they can establish an out-of-state training partnership dedicated to clinical training in all methods of induced abortion and expand abortion and contraception services in the teaching hospital to the extent allowed by law.
